What is Shiatsu?

"The heart of Shiatsu is like a mother's love — pressure of the hand causes the spring of life to flow."    -Shizuto Masunaga

Shiatsu, meaning "finger pressure" in Japanese, is a traditional manual therapy from Japan. It is a form of bodywork that uses mindful touch and gentle pressure to support the body’s natural ability to heal.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese healing arts, it works along the body’s energy pathways (meridians) to restore balance, release tension, and promote well-being.

More than a massage technique, Shiatsu is a deeply connected, therapeutic experience that brings awareness to both body and mind.

Origins & Philosophy

Shiatsu was developed in Japan in the early 20th century, drawing from ancient healing traditions such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and Anma (Japanese massage). Its foundation lies in the concept of Qi — the vital life energy that flows through the body along pathways called meridians.

Zen Shiatsu, as taught at our academy, goes beyond physical technique. It emphasizes presence, listening, and intuitive touch. Rooted in the Zen philosophy of simplicity and awareness, it invites both practitioner and receiver into a state of connection with themselves, each other, and the natural rhythm of life. The essence of Shiatsu is not to fix, but to support the body’s own ability to return to balance.

How It Works

Shiatsu is practiced through gentle pressure, stretches, and mindful contact along the body’s meridian lines — the pathways through which Qi flows. Using thumbs, palms, elbows, and sometimes knees, the practitioner applies rhythmic, sustained touch to stimulate energy flow and release tension.

Unlike Western massage, Shiatsu is typically done on a mat or futon, with the receiver fully clothed. The session is a silent dialogue — the practitioner listens deeply with their hands, responding to subtle cues from the body. This creates a unique treatment that balances the nervous system, supports internal organs, and invites a profound sense of calm and connection.

Benefits of Shiatsu

Shiatsu supports the body’s natural healing processes and helps restore balance on physical, emotional, and energetic levels.

Whether used as preventative care or to address specific concerns, it offers a wide range of benefits:

  • Relieves muscle tension and joint pain

  • Reduces stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue

  • Improves circulation and immune function

  • Supports better sleep and digestion

  • Balances energy and promotes deep relaxation

  • Enhances body awareness and emotional well-being

Regular sessions can also help with chronic conditions, offering a gentle yet powerful approach to long-term wellness.

Shiatsu as a Way of Life

Shiatsu is more than a therapeutic technique — it’s a mindful way of relating to the world. Through touch, breath, and presence, practitioners learn to slow down, listen deeply, and respond with awareness. This embodied approach naturally extends beyond the treatment space, influencing how we connect with ourselves, others, and life’s challenges.

As students develop their skills, they often find that Shiatsu becomes a path of personal growth. It nurtures patience, intuition, empathy, and grounded confidence — qualities that support both healing work and everyday life.
